High-speed onboard connectivity is moving from a premium extra towards an expected part of the private aviation experience, particularly as passengers grow used to being always connected.
The shift is being accelerated by technologies such as Starlink, the satellite internet service developed by SpaceX, which provides high-speed, low-latency connectivity. In aviation, it is increasingly being used to improve the onboard internet experience for passengers who want to work, communicate, stream content or join live meetings during flights.
Reuters reported this month that Starlink had signed 11 new airline customers during the year and had contracts covering more than 7,000 aircraft, highlighting how quickly high-speed satellite connectivity is moving from a niche feature towards a mainstream passenger expectation.
Connectivity becomes part of the aircraft selection conversation
Several operators are already adopting advanced connectivity systems and positioning them as a selling point. Across the wider private aviation market, onboard connectivity is increasingly becoming part of how operators present the premium passenger experience, particularly on longer international journeys.
At the same time, adoption across the wider market is not instant. Installation requirements, aircraft certification processes and operator-specific fleet planning can all affect how quickly high-speed connectivity becomes available across different aircraft types.

While demand for Starlink and similar high-speed connectivity solutions is still developing in the IMEA region, the topic is becoming more relevant among clients who rely on private aviation for business travel, VIP movements and longer international journeys.

“People have become used to being always connected. As more scheduled airlines offer onboard connectivity, clients increasingly expect the same level of service when flying privately,” said Claudia Krajhanzl, Vice President Passenger – IMEA at Chapman Freeborn.
“For now, high-speed connectivity is not yet available across every private aircraft, but it is fast moving towards becoming an expected standard, especially on long-haul flights. Demand is currently stronger on long-haul flights than on shorter regional sectors, where connectivity may be less decisive.”

For business travellers in particular, reliable connectivity can support productivity in the air, allowing passengers to stay in contact with teams, join live meetings, manage urgent decisions and continue working throughout the journey.

While it may not yet be the deciding factor for every journey, it can influence client preferences on longer flights where productivity, communication and passenger comfort matter most.
